Baseball Tournament
Sixteen grammar school basketball teams competed at
Maria High School the weekend of February 23 rd– 25 th . The girls
teams: Sutherland, Beasley Academy, Ariel Community Academy, St. Thomas
the Apostle, Washington Irving, Tolleston School, Daley School and
Higgins. The boys teams: Daley, Dulles, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mays,
Visitation and The Show Stoppers (traveling team). All participating
teams enjoyed this opportunity to showcase their skills and improve
their playing. The basketball tournament began Friday evening and
continued for two full days, culminating on Sunday with elimination
rounds.

Prayer Service
On Wednesday, March 7, 2007 the students, faculty and staff of Maria
High School came together for an International Prayer Service in honor
of Foreign Language Week. It was not only a celebration of the diverse
cultures that are represented at Maria, but a tribute to language study.
Foreign Language instructor, Elizabeth Bieniek states “the study of
other languages and nations leads to an appreciation of differences, as
well as an understanding of how we are all alike.” Ms. Bieniek planned
the service in light of her belief that “prayer is the bond that unites
millions of people worldwide.”

Tae Kwon
Build self confidence! Develop self discipline! Improve coordination and
balance! Enhance mental stability! Tae Kwon Do is a modern martial art,
characterized by its high, fast, spinning kicks. Introductory Tae Kwon
Do classes began Thursday, February 22 nd in Maria’s Student Center.
Registration is ongoing and all are welcome. Sensei Tami will instruct
students Thursdays from 1:45pm– 3:15pm and Saturdays from 3:00pm –
4:30pm. The fee for this training of mind and body is $45.00/month.

Maria High School Snow Ball 2007
At Maria’s annual
fundraising event, Snow Ball 2007, the Honorable Anne Burke, Illinois
Supreme Court Judge and graduate of Maria High School, will provide the
welcome address and formally induct the Sisters of St. Casimir who are
alumnae of St. Casimir Academy or Maria High School into Maria’s Alumnae
Hall of Fame. Leona Conforti, Class of 1959, will be presented with the
Maria Kaupas Award.
Guests at the Snowball will enjoy a snapshot history of the Sisters of
St. Casimir and Maria High School.
Annual Christmas Tea
Maria's Fine and Applied Arts Department spent Thursday afternoon with
about 30 Sisters of St. Casimir who reside at the Motherhouse. Students
and Sisters shared sweet treats, worked on a Christmas art project, sang
Christmas carols, and shared conversation.

Greater Chicago Food Depository
Almost 30 representatives from Maria High
School spent three hours on December 9, 2006 volunteering at the Greater
Chicago Food Depository. Vouchers earned will support the SSC Food
Pantry in Marquette Park.

Intramural badminton
Intramural badminton – As part of Maria’s new intramural
program, students have begun participating in badminton. Ms.
Tamara Somerville, athletic director, is coordinating badminton as part
of a series of intramural activities: kickball, badminton, flag
football.

Maria Student Awarded FIRST place
in City Vehicle Sticker Contest
Contest. Monica joins a list of Maria art students dating back to
1979 when the first student designed sticker was selected. Monica,
of course, is delighted that her sticker will be selected as the one to
be used for next year’s city vehicle sticker.

Christmas Concert
Maria music students and Gospel
choir performed a Christmas Concert on Sunday, December 3rd at 3:00 p.m.
Mrs.Christina Chen, music teacher, directed the performance. Junior
Airreal Watkins performed a solo and directed the Gospel Choir. Sister
Reginald, former music teacher, accompanied on the violin.

THE MATCHMAKER
Maria High School’s recent performances of THE MATCHMAKER highlighted
the dramatic talent of Maria students and director, Maria Alumna and
Teacher, Ms. Laura Miski. The cast presented a sneak preview to
area elementary schools and concluded with a Sunday matinee for the
community. The cast included (standing, back row) Brittany Martin

SSC Food Pantry
Maria faculty and students recently
presented boxes of collected food to the Sisters of St. Casimir for
their food pantry. Sister Grace Ann Kalafut, one of the Food
Pantry coordinators, was present during the Thanksgiving Prayer Service
to accept food on behalf of the Sisters of St. Casimir.
Because of recent shortages in available food for those served at the
food pantry, the students will continue to collect non-perishable food
on an on-going basis. Additionally, students, faculty, and
staff, under the direction of teacher Mrs. Bettyann Zevallos,
volunteered at the Chicago Food Depository on December 9th to
benefit the SSC Food Pantry.

Assistance Information Night

February 28th, 2007 – 6:30 p.m. Business office staff will be on
hand to discuss tuition, tuition options,
and tuition assistance. All parents/guardians of 9th,
10th, and 11th graders as well as parents of newly
accepted students are encouraged to attend.
