At Maria High School’s recent Centennial Charity Day, from left, freshmen Jannely Villagomez and Mercedes Perez have fun competing in the Class Penny Jar War with, second from right, junior Sade Springfield. The battle of the penny jars, which was sponsored by the National Honor Society, brought in the highest total, a profit of $358. Other booths that topped $100 in profit were Student Council’s ($197), Speak Your Truth Club’s ($126), and crafts by Sister Clement Mazgelis, SSC ($101). The Parent Club contributed $85 by selling ice cream sundaes.
Centennial Charity Day successfully raised $1,752, which Charity Day organizer Judy Bumbul, Campus Minister, sent to three causes: Catholic Relief Services to assist victims of Hurricane Irene and victims of hunger and starvation in East Africa; Southwest Chicago PADS; and St Rose Center, which provides training services on the Southwest Side to adults who have developmental disabilities.
