Maria High School students feel happy as they get ready recently to deliver many boxes and bags of donated non-perishable food and household products to residents of the Saint Martin de Porres House of Hope. Pictured (front, from left) are Vivian Acevedo, Paulina Lopez, Iman Brown, Stephanie Rodriguez, Venessa Suarez, Jenaun Jackson, Brianna Terrell, Ruth Hollis, and Zoie Sanders-Cobb; (back, from top left) Carly Comiskey, chaperone; Brianna Burks, and Shayana Lanier. These generous students, who are in Sister Elizabeth Ann Yocius’ Senior Advisory, won the mini-field trip by collecting 137 items found on the House of Hope’s Wish List.
All Advisories at Maria, as well as faculty and staff, participated in the November Wish List collection for the Saint Martin de Porres House of Hope. To recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Guidance Counselor Mrs. Comiskey sponsored the Wish List drive and escorted the group to drop off the donations and visit with the women and children who reside at House of Hope. There, they learned about the lives of families at the private, non-profit, faith-based recovery home for homeless women, who are affected by substance abuse.
At the home, food, shelter, and programs are provided for women and their children. House of Hope’s goal is to enable each resident to leave the shelter with a renewed sense of dignity through personal responsibility so she can re‐enter her community as a positive force and remain stabilized.
